I just had a chance to read "Beyond Ice and Fire". It is a wonderful record and photographic essay recounting a personal summer excursion to Iceland and Greenland.Reading the book certainly made me wish to go there myself! The text and photographs very effectively convey the mood and atmosphere of these wild, arctic territories, and the pleasures of visiting them. The cold, hostile climate of these places is well-represented, and the shots provide hints of the weather's unpredictability. The emptiness and at the same time the peacefulness of these lands are also communicated well.
In contrast, the warm reds, and the bright blues and yellows of human habitation provide the striking counterpoints of civilisation. Man has managed to tame the wilderness to some degree.
I loved the variety evident from the photographs - ranging from shots of puffins, to mountains, buildings, people, water, sky, ice & snow. Stillness and movement; scale, coldness, remoteness are all words this study evokes in me.
Overall, the authors provided a well-balanced essay. Was there one thing I'd like to have seen more of? Perhaps more candid close-ups of the local people, reflecting their culture in this uniquely challenging setting! But the book inspires, even without these.

Beyond Ice and Fire Kai Wing Yiu and Miriam Chan 9780987264626 Books Reviews
Beautiful photos and a teaser for a driving trip around the whole of Iceland. It definitely made me want to go back! I have never been to Greenland, so the book provided a nice taste of that, too.
This get my five stars. Why? Because it is an especially beautiful and well produced book. It has more than 100 splendid photographs (on high quality paper) of Iceland and Greenland that are indeed a pleasure to look through and to study in detail. The photographers Yiu and Chan have captured these lands so vividly you can feel you are there. From Iceland's sulphurous craters, its red and white houses, its dramatic waterfalls and a close up of a handsome puffin looking out to sea, to where the photographers have got up close to towering icebergs off the Greenland coast - all seems so real you could indeed be there. The authors' travelogue at the end provides you with useful tips should you want to go to these lands. After reading this book you will surely want to! Recommended for those with an interest in Iceland and Greenland, in geography, in having a beautiful and unusual coffee table book and for libraries to add to their travel writing collections. It would make a thoughtful gift for friends and family and as a going-away present for a colleague.
